Representation of Women in the Media
The Representations of Women in the Media project (Reps) aims to raise awareness, research and to provoke debate and action in response to the way in which women are represented in the media. It is a grassroots, volunteer-led research project culminating in exhibitions, presentations and publication of the findings.
The Reps project takes place in November each year and we are looking for volunteers to take part in research tasks ranging from 30 mins to 1 month. Findings are collated and presented to inform on media gender bias. The evidence has been picked up by National Union of Journalists and the Home Office.
Participants are very welcome, please get in touch if you are interested in taking part. More details.
One of the recurring issues we have encountered with Reps is the absence of women from our cultural landscape. From comedy clubs with all male lineups, to cinemas with all male line ups, gigs with all male lineups, all male voices on the radio, all male faces in the newspapers.
So where are the women?
BFN in partnership with Bristol Fawcett Society, Bristol IndyMedia, The Festival of Ideas, the Cube Cinema and the Watershed have hosted events to explore and redress the lack of women in British culture and media:
An Evening of Women in Performance
10th January, The Cube Cinema, 8pm - late.
Bidisha: Where are the Women?
6th March, The Watershed, 2pm

Where are the women?
Here they are!

8pm, 10th January 2011
The Cube Cinema, Bristol
An evening to celebrate women in performance.
Bristol Indymedia and BFN are hosting an event at the Cube as part of the ongoing Representation of Women in the Media project (Reps). The title of the event is 'Where are the women? Here they are!' and we want you to get involved.
- Are you a woman musician who can play an acoustic set?
- Are you a woman artist?
- Are you a woman with a short film you would like to screen?
- Are you a woman comedian?
- Are you a woman dancer/troupe or magician or act?
Then we want you to come and show off your talents on 10th January 2011
One of the recurring issues we have encountered with Reps is the sheer
absence of women from our cultural landscape. From comedy clubs with all
male lineups, to cinemas with all male line ups, gigs with all male lineups,
all male voices on the radio, all male faces in the newspapers.
On the 10th January, we are changing that. We are celebrating the creativity
and talent of the women of our city.
If you would like to perform or show your film then please get in touch with Sian and Jess here with information on what you can bring to the evening and why you want to get involved with the event and we will put
together a programme.
We have a really small turn around time so if you do want to get involved
then please understand that we need you to commit to performing etc on the
10th Jan, and that you can bring your own equipment etc.
We can't wait to hear from you and to put on this fantastic event! Email us here.
